Governor Mohammed Umar Bago of Niger State has ordered the immediate closure of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, following rising concerns over security breaches within the university community.
The decision comes in the wake of mounting tension sparked by the recent stabbing and death of a 300-level student, Jafar, who was reportedly attacked by suspected armed robbers.
Reports from Lapai indicate that the incident has stirred mistrust between students and members of the host community, with both sides accusing each other of harbouring individuals with questionable character.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, students took to the streets, barricading a major road in Lapai blaming the police and university authorities for failing to address the growing wave of crime in the area.
The students called for a complete overhaul of the security architecture in the university and surrounding areas.
Concerned about the potential escalation of the crisis and the risk of further loss of lives and destruction of property, Governor Bago directed the closure of the institution until further notice.
A statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Abubakar Usman, read:
“The decision comes in light of recent security breaches and the unfortunate loss of life within the university community. The safety and security of all citizens, especially students, remains a top priority for the state government.”
The government expressed deep sorrow over the incident and assured the public that proactive steps are being taken to address the situation.
While urging the host communities to remain calm and vigilant, the SSG added that investigations into the incident are ongoing and that those responsible will be brought to justice.
