The Mokwa Flood Relief Support Group (MFRSG), a volunteer organization in Mokwa, Niger State, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Mohammed Umar Bago for their support to victims of the recent flood disaster that claimed many lives and displaced thousands.
Our correspondent reports that President Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, approved N2 billion for resettlement, 20 trucks of grains, and a transformer to restore electricity in Mokwa town.
Governor Bago, upon his return from an overseas trip, visited the affected areas.
He approved N1 billion for evacuating victims from IDP camps to rented homes and provided truckloads of food and earmarked N7 billion for rebuilding roads and bridges.
However, MFRSG believes the relief process can yield better results if the Governor includes local representatives in the rehabilitation and resettlement committee.
The group maintains that a lasting solution to the recurring floods in Mokwa and its surrounding villages is achievable.
In a statement signed by its Secretary, Barrister Suleiman Ndaguye, and released in Minna on Monday, MFRSG warned against politicizing the process,stressing the need to involve individuals who understand Mokwa’s geography and settlement patterns.
The Chairman of the group, retired Assistant Controller General of Customs, Alhaji Ahmed Nasir, noted that the disaster revealed deeper issues needing long-term action.
He urged the federal and state governments to move beyond relief and develop infrastructural plans to end the annual flood crisis.
While appreciating government efforts, Nasir expressed concern that some genuine victims might be excluded, emphasizing that including trusted locals in the committee would ensure fairness and accuracy in identifying affected families.
MFRSG, made up of distinguished sons and daughters of Mokwa, appealed for swift implementation of all promised interventions to prevent further suffering and prepare the town for future challenges.
