The Tiv Youth Organisation (TYO) in Nasarawa State has raised the alarm over a series of violent attacks and killings targeting Tiv communities in the state.
Speaking during a press briefing on Monday in Lafia, the state capital, the TYO President, Isaiah Audu, condemned the recent wave of violence that has displaced thousands and left several people dead.
“We gather today with heavy hearts to condemn the recent spate of violent attacks on innocent farmers in Nasarawa State These senseless and brutal killings have left families traumatized, communities shattered, and a palpable sense of fear gripping our rural populace”Audu lamented.
Audu recounted that on Thursday, June 13, and Sunday, June 16, three communities:Dooga Ayande in Dooka Ward of Doma Local Government Area (LGA), Antsa in Kwara Ward of Keana LGA, and Tse Yange in Tudun Adabu Ward of Obi LGA came under attack.
He said that at least,four farmers were killed in those incidents, with several other isolated attacks also reported.
The TYO president added that more than 2,000 farmers have been displaced and are now taking refuge in various camps across the state.
While appreciating Governor Abdullahi Sule and the Nasarawa State Emergency Management Agency for recently supplying relief materials to the displaced persons, Audu urged the government to go further by launching a full investigation into the attacks to identify and prosecute the perpetrators.
He also appealed for increased security presence in the affected communities to allow displaced residents return to their homes and resume farming activities.
Audu extended the organisation’s condolences to the families of the victims and wished a swift recovery to those injured.
He called on Tiv residents to remain law-abiding and continue to live in peace with people of other tribes and religions for the collective development of the state and the nation.
