The Democratic Front (TDF) has lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to construct a new headquarters for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja, describing it as a milestone in the consolidation of democratic institutions in Nigeria.
In a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Mallam Danjuma Muhammad, and Secretary, Chief Wale Adedayo, the group emphasized the historical significance of the initiative, especially against the backdrop of Nigeria’s long struggle between democracy and military rule.
According to TDF, the recurring vulnerability of Nigeria’s democracy is rooted in the symbolic fragility of its institutions and the slow internalization of democratic norms. The group’s leadership commended President Tinubu for backing his commitment to institutional reforms with decisive action.
“President Tinubu, despite being a major victim of military dictatorship and a target of anti-democratic forces, has remained a consistent advocate for democratic development,” the statement read.
The group highlighted the president’s recent gesture of honoring key pro-democracy figures with national awards, noting his decision to exclude himself from the list as a testament to his humility and dedication to democratic ideals.
TDF noted that the construction of a befitting edifice for INEC would significantly enhance the Commission’s operational efficiency, administrative capacity, and constitutional independence, thereby reinforcing the foundations of Nigeria’s democratic system.
They further acknowledged the Tinubu administration’s commitment to INEC’s autonomy, citing recent governorship elections in Edo, Imo, and Ondo states, which were conducted without executive interference.
“This shows that under President Tinubu’s leadership, the independence of the electoral body remains intact,” TDF stated.
The group expressed optimism that the president’s ongoing support for democratic institutions will pave the way for a free, fair, and credible general election in 2027.
TDF urged Nigerians to remain supportive of the administration’s policies, describing current economic reforms as necessary steps toward a more prosperous and democratic future.
