The United Nations has strongly condemned the recent deadly attacks on Yelewata village in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, North Central Nigeria,calling for justice for the victims.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres, in a statement delivered by Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq, expressed deep concern over the scale and brutality of the violence.
“The Secretary-General condemns the killing of innocent civilians in Nigeria and hopes that those responsible for this violence will be identified and brought to justice.
We are monitoring the situation closely,” Haq said during a media briefing at the UN Headquarters in New York.
According to Amnesty International and local authorities, over 100 people were killed, dozens remain missing, and hundreds were injured after suspected armed herdsmen stormed Yelewata late Friday night into the early hours of Saturday, setting homes ablaze and causing mass displacement.
Emergency responders reported that many of the victims were already displaced persons who had sought refuge in the village following previous attacks.
President Bola Tinubu is expected to visit Benue State on Wednesday to offer condolences and assess the situation.
