Sokoto IED Blast Claims 2 More Lives, Raising Death Toll to 8

Two more women have died from injuries sustained in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast in Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State, raising the total death toll to eight.

Our correspondent reports that the tragic incident occurred during the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations in Dorawa village, Gwabro District,a community that has been under the control of terrorists for over five years.

Six victims were initially confirmed dead on Sunday after the locally made IED exploded in an area reportedly controlled by Lakurawa terrorists, who are known to operate a stronghold in the vicinity.

The latest casualties were confirmed by Garzali Raka, Security Adviser to the Tangaza Local Government Council, and the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Ahmed Rufai.

According to their account, the victims were traveling from Gwabro to Zurmuku when the device detonated.

An eyewitness, Hashimu, shared that the explosion happened during a traditional Sallah outing.

“As is the custom, especially among the youth, people go from village to village to visit relatives and pay Sallah homage. It was during one of such visits that the IED exploded,” he said.

Authorities said they have continued investigations into the incident, while residents remain on high alert amid ongoing insecurity in the region.
