The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of no fewer than 20 athletes and officials from Kano State who lost their lives in a ghastly motor accident.

The ill-fated incident occurred about 50 kilometers from Kano shortly after the team’s return journey from the 22nd National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The athletes had represented their state with pride, returning home with medals, memories, and the hope of greater heights, only for their journey to end in tragedy.

In a solemn statement signed by Tony Nezianya,Public Relations Officer, Nigeria Olympic Committee on Sunday, the President of the NOC, Engr. Habu Gumel, joined by the entire Olympic family in Nigeria, extended heartfelt condolences to the Government of Kano State.

They also express sympathy with the Kano State Sports Commission, the National Sports Commission, and the Government of Ogun State.

“The loss of these remarkable individuals, young, talented, and full of promise,is a profound tragedy that has shaken our entire sporting community,” said Tony Nezianya, Public Relations Officer of the NOC.

Among the victims were dedicated athletes who had not only showcased excellence in their disciplines but also served as role models to peers and upcoming talents.

Alongside them were their supportive coaches and selfless administrative officials who shared in their vision and victories.

“These athletes were not just competitors; they were champions of resilience, discipline, and teamwork,” the NOC lamented.

“Their dedication, hard work, and passion for sports inspired many. Their absence leaves a void that will be deeply felt across the nation,”Nezianya said.

The NOC called on Nigerians to join in honoring the memory of the deceased by reflecting on their contributions to the growth of sports and the unity they fostered among states through athletic excellence.

As the sports family mourns, the Committee prays for strength and comfort for the bereaved families, teammates, and the entire Kano sports fraternity.

May the souls of the departed rest in perfect peace, and may their legacy continue to inspire future generations.
