The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Niger State chapter, has extended its deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathy to the people of Mokwa Local Government Area following the devastating flood disaster that struck Mokwa town.
Our correspondent recalls that the flash flood, triggered by torrential rains, ravaged several communities, including Tiffin Maza, Anguwan Hausawa, and Rabba.
According to the Niger State Government, the disaster claimed 151 lives, with more persons reported missing as of last Saturday.
In a condolence message, the Chairman of CAN in Niger State and Catholic Bishop of Kontagora Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, expressed profound sorrow over the tragedy and prayed for the repose of the souls of the departed.
“The entire Christian community in Niger State sympathizes with the victims of the Mokwa flood. I assure you of our continuous prayers for the repose of their souls.
“On behalf of all Christians in the state, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. We stand in solidarity with everyone affected by this disaster,” the Bishop said.
The cleric commended the federal and state governments for directing relevant ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs), along with emergency response teams, to mobilize resources in support of the affected communities.
He emphasized the importance of safety consciousness among residents living in flood-prone areas.
“Death is an inevitable end for all living beings. It can come at any time. While we continue praying for the families of the victims, we urge them to remain hopeful and resilient,”the CAN Chairman noted.
Meanwhile, two more bodies were recovered along the watercourse by Sunday afternoon, bringing the confirmed death toll to 153. Several families are still searching for their loved ones, four days after the disaster struck.
Victims’ families have appealed for support from well-meaning Nigerians and governments at all levels to help them rebuild their lives.
