In a remarkable blend of faith and cultural tourism, Saudi authorities have hosted 84 international journalists on an insightful tour of Makkah’s most iconic religious museums to deepen global appreciation for Islamic history, science, and spirituality.
The Saudi Authority of Media Regulation, in collaboration with the Royal Commission for Makkah City and Holy Sites, organized the tour on Tuesday to spotlight Makkah not just as the heart of Islam, but also as a center of cultural enlightenment.
The group visited three renowned institutions: the International Museum of the Prophet’s Biography, the Clock Tower Museum, and the Museum of the Holy Kaaba — each offering a unique perspective on the rich legacy of Islam and the sacred history of the Holy City.
At the International Museum of the Prophet’s Biography, tour guide Mohammed Qamerein explained that the initiative was designed to provide deeper understanding of the Prophet Muhammad’s (SAW) life, character, and teachings.
“It is important for pilgrims and visitors alike to learn about the Prophet because understanding his life is at the core of Islamic faith.
“This museum offers an immersive experience into his legacy, combining historical narratives with interactive exhibits,” Qamerein said.
Journalists expressed deep appreciation for the initiative. Zakia Koya from Malaysia called the experience enlightening and spiritually rewarding.
“This tour is incredibly informative. Many journalists covering Hajj and Umrah don’t have the time or access to visit these sacred places,”
“It enriches our understanding of Makkah beyond the rituals — we see the profound historical and spiritual roots that shaped Islam,”she noted.
Koya, however, suggested more interactive features in the museums to enhance engagement.
“Being able to touch, hear, and feel exhibits would bring the stories to life in more powerful ways,”she added.
From Turkey, journalist Esra Esrahacioglu highlighted the technological advancement in storytelling at the museums.
“It’s impressive to see ancient Islamic narratives presented with modern digital tools,” “This visit allowed us to visualize Makkah as it once was, and appreciate how far the city and its message have journeyed,”she said.
The International Museum of the Prophet’s Biography, inaugurated in 2021 and fully operational by 2024, aims to be a beacon of spiritual education, showcasing the values and life of the Prophet (SAW) through advanced audiovisual methods.
The Clock Tower Museum, perched atop the towering Abraj Al Bait, offers a panoramic view of the Holy Mosque and houses exhibits on timekeeping, astronomy, and the Islamic lunar calendar, essential for religious observances.
The Museum of the Holy Kaaba takes visitors on a journey through the sacred history of the Kaaba, revealing its transformations over centuries and its central role in Islamic worship.
Together, the museums create a compelling spiritual and educational experience for visitors and pilgrims alike, reinforcing Makkah’s dual identity as a destination of faith and cultural exploration.
