No.fewer than 27 suspects have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the brutal killing of a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and the destruction of the Rano Police Division headquarters in Kano State,in a violent outburst of mob justice by miscreants.
According to the Kano State Police Command, the chaos erupted on Monday following the death of a motorcycle mechanic, Abdullahi Musa, who had been arrested by the police for alleged reckless riding.
The police alleged that Musa, suspected to be under the influence of drugs, collapsed while in custody and later died at Rano General Hospital while receiving treatment.
Reacting to the incident, a group of irate individuals stormed the Rano Police Division, setting parts of the station ablaze, burning two vehicles, and vandalizing ten others.
During the attack, the DPO was severely assaulted and later died at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.
“The suspects launched a violent assault, leading to the murder of the DPO, burning of the station and property, and widespread destruction,” said SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the command’s spokesperson.
Kiyawa confirmed that 27 suspects had been arrested in connection with the attack.
He said normalcy has returned to the area, adding that a full-scale investigation is underway.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police, Kano State, Dr. Ibrahim Bakori, has visited the crime scene and met with the Emir of Rano, Ambassador Mohammed Isah Umar where he assured the public of a thorough probe to uncover the truth behind the incident and bring all perpetrators to justice.
“The command appeals for calm and urges residents to allow the law to take its course. We are committed to restoring and maintaining public order,”he added.
The police boss in the state called on the public to assist the command with credible information as the investigation unfolds.
