The Niger State chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) has held its Symposium and Annual General Meeting (AGM), focusing on strategic communication for improved safety across the state.
Our correspondent reports that this in a bid to enhance collaboration between communities and security agencies.
The event, held at the Women Event Centre, Old State Secretariat, Minna, drew key stakeholders, including the former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Zubairu Dada, who chaired the occasion.
He emphasized the importance of exploring new approaches to public communication and information management as part of broader efforts to maintain peace and safety in the state.
With the theme “Communication Strategies in Managing Security Information in Niger State,” speakers stressed the growing importance of timely and effective communication in today’s dynamic security landscape.
They called for continuous innovation in how security information is shared and managed to support the efforts of security personnel.
The Commissioner of Police in the state,CP.Adamu Abdullahi Elleman, represented by the Head of Legal Department, CPS Jude Akaeze, reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police to protect lives and property.
The CP stressed the need for stronger collaboration between the police with residents, noting that actionable and timely information from the public is essential in addressing emerging security concerns.
“No single agency can do it alone. Effective community engagement is key to building a secure environment,” he said, while assuring citizens of confidentiality and professionalism in handling shared information.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Homeland Security, Gen. Abdullahi Mohammed (rtd), underscored the importance of trust and confidence-building in fostering effective communication between communities and security stakeholders.
Adding to the discourse, Dr. Ternenge Samuel Ende, Head of the Department of Mass Communication at IBB University, Lapai, called for openness in the flow of information related to public safety.
He advocated for reduced barriers to sharing relevant details that can aid in crime prevention and resolution.
As part of the event, the NIPR chapter presented posthumous awards to notable indigenes of the state, including former Minister Abubakar Tanko Achituwo, Matthew Daniel, and Mohammed Ali, in recognition of their contributions to the development of the state.
