Mr. Ogungbemi Oguntula, a distinguished journalist and former Director at the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), has passed away. He died on Sunday, May 11, 2025, at a private hospital in Ibadan, Oyo State, just nine days before his 70th birthday. He was 69.
Fondly called Gbemi Oguntula by colleagues and friends, the late journalist began his career at NAN in 1983 and rose through the ranks to the position of Director before retiring in 2016.
Throughout his illustrious career, Oguntula played a prominent role in the Lagos-Ibadan media landscape, especially during the 1980s and early 2000s. He was renowned for his wide network, effortlessly connecting with top figures in politics, the military, business, academia, and government. Many of the era’s most influential personalities regarded him as a trusted confidant and friend.
Known for his humility, integrity, and dedication to journalism, Oguntula was not just a towering media figure but also a mentor to many young journalists within and beyond NAN. His humane and urbane nature earned him deep respect from peers and associates alike.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Olusola Oguntula, two children, and grandchildren.
Details of his burial arrangements will be announced by the family in due course.
May his soul rest in peace, and may the Almighty grant his loved ones the strength to bear the loss.
