The Inclusive Friends Association (IFA), in partnership with the Benue State Government and the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), on Monday convened a technical review session on the Benue State Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Bill.
The one-day session, held ahead of the bill’s final hearing and passage, brought together government officials, civil society actors, legal experts, and members of the disability community. Their goal was to refine the legislation to meet national and international standards while addressing the unique needs of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Benue State.
Grace Jerry, Executive Director of IFA, highlighted the significance of the session, noting that the bill had already passed its first and second readings in the State House of Assembly.
“This session is crucial to ensure all stakeholders have a chance to make final contributions,” Jerry said. “Once enacted, this law will become a beacon of hope and empowerment for thousands of citizens with disabilities across Benue.”
Representing the Chairman of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Kennedy Angbo (Otukpo/Akpa Constituency) confirmed that the bill was in its final stage and awaiting the Governor’s assent.
Leonard Viashima, Director General of the Bureau for International Cooperation and Development (BICD), applauded the state’s commitment to inclusion but stressed the need for thorough review.
“We commend Governor Hyacinth Alia’s support for this bill. It’s essential we scrutinize it now to prevent gaps that could hinder its effectiveness later,” Viashima said. “When passed, it will significantly enhance the lives of vulnerable citizens—and ultimately benefit us all.”
Speaking on behalf of the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Assistant Director of Legal Services, Barr. Sunday Sabah, emphasized that persons with disabilities constitute at least 15% of the population, underlining the urgency of legislative action for their protection and inclusion.
JONAPWD Chairman, Onah Adeyi, praised IFA’s consistent advocacy, pledging the group’s continued commitment to the bill’s success.
Participants rigorously examined key provisions of the bill, proposing recommendations to ensure its effective implementation and long-term impact.
