The Adamawa State Police Command says it has uncovered a shocking case of kidnapping involving a church member who allegedly abducted two Catholic priests from within his own congregation.
The suspect, 34-year-old Tahamado Jonathan Demian, was arrested following a tactical police operation that rescued Reverend Father Abraham Samman of the Jalingo Diocese and Reverend Father Matthew David Dusami of the Yola Diocese.
The priests, both deeply respected within their communities, were reportedly held in captivity at a remote criminal enclave in Gwaida Malam village, a lawless stretch of terrain between Numan and Demsa local government areas.
The Police Public Relations Officer PPRO the Police Command in Yola,Suleiman Nguroje, revealed in a statement that the operation commenced on February 21, 2025, adding that it was a sequel to weeks of careful intelligence gathering.
According to him, no ransom was paid for the release of the clergymen, who were rescued unharmed and are currently receiving medical care.
He said the most jarring revelation, however, was the identity of the kidnapper: a fellow churchgoer,Demian, 34, a known member of the same church as the victims.
“His betrayal speaks to a deeper crisis of trust and security within sacred spaces,” said Nguroje.
Items recovered during the operation include.a locally fabricated assault rifle, two mobile handsets, and multiple SIM cards, suggesting the existence of a broader criminal network.
The PPRO quoted the Commissioner of Police in the state,CP.Dankombo Morris, as praising the joint efforts of the state government, sister security agencies, and the vigilant public resulting in the success of the rescue operation.
“This success shows what is possible when we act in unity.
“We must all remain alert and cooperative with security operatives to ensure a swift response to emerging threats,” he urged.
