Nasarawa United FC delivered a stunning blow to Akwa United’s survival hopes on Sunday with a commanding 2-0 win in a tense Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Match Day 32 encounter at the Lafia Township Stadium.
Backed by their passionate home crowd,returning for the first time since the December 22, 2024 ban was lifted,Nasarawa United made the most of their home advantage, punishing Akwa United for costly defensive lapses.
Ugochukwu Leonard opened the scoring in the 2nd minute, pouncing on a shaky back pass, while Abubakar Garba sealed the victory in the 84th minute, capitalizing on yet another defensive error by the visitors.
The result breathes new life into Nasarawa United’s relegation battle, lifting them to 16th on the log with 39 points.
Akwa United, however, remains in the danger zone at 18th with 37 points and just six games left to save their season.
Nasarawa United’s Assistant Technical Adviser, Mohammed Saidu, hailed his team’s discipline and tactical execution after the match.
“We’re treating every match like a final. The boys followed instructions perfectly, and we’re determined to stay in the league,” he said.
