Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo, former governor of Oyo State, has passed away just days before his 90th birthday.
His family confirmed his death in a statement issued on Sunday in Ibadan and signed by Oladapo Ogunwusi on their behalf. The statement, titled “Victor Olunloyo Goes Home,” read:
“With a heavy heart but gratitude to the Almighty, we announce the passing into glory of Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo — former governor of Oyo State, mathematician, engineer, and renowned technocrat — a few days before his 90th birthday.
The Balogun of Oyo and Otun Bobasewa of Ife, Dr. Olunloyo served as the first Rector of both The Polytechnic, Ibadan and Kwara State Polytechnic, among several other notable appointments.
“His long record of service to the nation and humanity remains a source of pride to his family and associates, even as we come to grips with this great loss.
The Olunloyo family appreciates the understanding of the press and the public as they begin preparations for a befitting burial.
In April 2024, rumors of Dr. Olunloyo’s death made the rounds on social media and news platforms.
However, he debunked the reports during a visit by The PUNCH to his Molete residence in Ibadan.
“I’m still here, not yet gone,” he had said at the time, expressing disappointment over the false news.
“Those breaking death news and the person presumed dead will all die one day.
“I’ve been lucky. My father died at 42, while my mother lived to 102. I’m 89. I’ve already crossed the expected life span,”he noted.
He also recalled how a similar rumor had circulated in June 2022, falsely claiming he had died at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan.
His family later clarified that he was alive but dealing with age-
related health challenges, and appealed for public prayers.
Dr. Olunloyo’s contributions to public service, education, and
governance have left an enduring legacy.
