The rising wave of insecurity in Okunland, Kogi West Senatorial District, is putting the area’s agricultural sector,and by extension, its food security,at serious risk, a leading agricultural expert has warned.
Dr. Tunde Arosanyin, sounded the alarm at the Okun Development Association (ODA) Summit in Kabba while presenting a paper titled “The Impact of Insecurity on the Agricultural Value Chain in Okunland.”
He painted a grim picture of the devastating effects of kidnappings, killings, and destruction of farmlands, stressing that urgent action is needed to safeguard farmers, sustain food production, and protect the local economy.
Using a MEAL (Main Idea, Evidence, Analysis, and Link) framework, Dr. Arosanyin explained how unchecked insecurity is crippling the agricultural sector in Okunland.
He explained:”Main Idea: Insecurity is disrupting farming activities, leading to food shortages and economic setbacks.
“Evidence: Reports of farmers being kidnapped or killed, as well as increasing destruction of farmland, were cited.
“Analysis: Unchecked influx of unprofiled strangers, uncontrolled grazing, and inadequate security measures are compounding the crisis.
“Link: The continued neglect of security concerns will ultimately lead to food scarcity and economic decline in Okunland.
Dr. Arosanyin urged immediate intervention, calling for a multi-pronged approach to addressing the crisis, including through enhanced security measures in rural farmlands.,youth engagement in agriculture to boost productivity and employment.
Other measures,he added are support from political leaders to drive policies that protect farmers.,expansion of tree crop farming as a long-term strategy to ensure sustainability.
“Insecurity is a major threat to agricultural development, and if we fail to act now, Okunland faces an impending socio-economic disaster,” he warned.
Dr. Arosanyin strong appeal for vigilance, urging community members to be proactive in reporting suspicious activities.
“Security is a collective responsibility. If you see something, say something!” he emphasized.
The ODA Summit, themed “Unlocking Okunland’s Full Potential Through Strategic Partnerships,” convened key stakeholders from various sectors to explore sustainable solutions to the region’s growing security and economic challenges.
