The Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo,on Saturday received the National Unity Torch ahead of the 22nd National Sports Festival, set to take place from May 16 to 30, 2025, in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Governor Ododo, represented by his Deputy, Comrade Joel Salifu, underscored the significance of sports in fostering national unity and development. He emphasized that Kogi State remains committed to using the festival as a platform for collaboration, cultural exchange, and showcasing the athletic talents of its citizens.
In a statement released by the Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor, Mr. Unubi Emmanuel, Ododo assured that the state government is fully backing Team Kogi and is determined to ensure their successful participation in the festival.
The leader of the Unity Torch delegation, Ikana Mbora, a member of the National Sports Commission, explained that the torch relay, a tradition preceding the festival, symbolizes national unity and serves as an official invitation to all states. She noted that Kogi State is the fourth stop on the nationwide tour following the torch’s official launch by the President.
Similarly, Mr. Haruna Jibo, Permanent Secretary of the Kogi State Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, reaffirmed that preparations are in top gear to enable Team Kogi to deliver an outstanding performance at the festival.
The National Sports Festival, Nigeria’s premier multi-sport event, will bring together athletes from across the country to compete in various disciplines, reinforcing the role of sports in promoting national cohesion and excellence.
