A devastating rainstorm,on Tuesday, wreaked havoc in Itobe District, Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi State, leaving over 500 houses in ruins and displacing hundreds of families.
Our correspondent gathered that properties worth millions of naira, including schools, health centers, churches, and mosques, were destroyed, while several residents sustained injuries.
The Ejeh of Ofu, Alhaji Akwu Obaje, described the disaster as heartbreaking, lamenting the scale of destruction across six villages—Itobe, Adumu, Oladebu, Ajegwu, and Itagidi.
“The scene is chaotic, with roofs torn off buildings, trees uprooted, and power lines snapped. Many residents have been left homeless,” the traditional ruler stated.
He called on the government, corporate organizations, and well-meaning individuals to urgently intervene and provide relief to affected families.
“Our thoughts are with the people of Itobe District during this difficult time. I urge the government and compassionate Nigerians to help restore hope to those who have lost their homes and means of livelihood,” Alhaji Akwu pleaded.
The storm, which struck with fierce winds and torrential rains, has left residents in dire need of shelter, medical aid, and food supplies.
Many families are now struggling to find safety, with children and the elderly particularly vulnerable.
Victims are appealing for immediate assistance to rebuild their lives, as the destruction further worsens the hardship faced by communities already grappling with economic challenges.
The Reporters reports that With the rainy season just beginning, fears of further devastation loom unless urgent steps are taken to provide durable solutions and preventive measures.
Residents of Itobe District,who spoke with our correspondent,said they are now looking to the state and federal governments for swift action.
