A 25-year-old man, Shamseen Danshehu, has been fatally stabbed in the chest during an altercation with a suspected scavenger, identified as Mubarak, in the Kwangila area of Minna, capital of Nigeria, north central Nigeria.
Eyewitnesses said the suspect, who is often seen rummaging through refuse bins in the neighborhood, engaged Danshehu in a fight before allegedly stabbing him with a pair of scissors.
Our correspondent gathered that the victim was rushed to Minna General Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer for Police Command in the state,SP.Wasiu Abiodun, said the suspect, who is believed to be mentally unstable, was immediately taken into custody.
“It was reported that Mubarak, a known scavenger in the area, had a physical altercation with a passerby, Shamseen Danshehu.
“During the fight, Mubarak stabbed the victim in the chest with scissors. The victim was rushed to the hospital but did not survive,” Abiodun stated.
He said the police have commenced an investigation into the incident to determine the motive behind the attack.
According to the police spokesman,the suspect remains in custody as authorities work to ascertain his mental state and any potential criminal charges.
Residents of Kwangila expressed shock over the incident, describing Mubarak as a familiar figure often seen wandering the area.
They called on law enforcement to enhance security and address the rising concerns over mentally unstable individuals roaming the streets.
The body of the deceased has been deposited at the hospital morgue, while police continue their probe into the tragic killing.
