The National President of the Market and Traders Association of Nigeria (MATAN), Alhaji Abbas Jamilu, has called on traders to refrain from increasing prices of goods and commodities in anticipation of Ramadan.
In a statement released to journalists in Abuja on Friday, Jamilu also appealed to traders to respect the spiritual significance of the holy month and avoid exploiting the occasion for financial gain.
Jamilu emphasized the importance of fairness and integrity, urging traders to act in a way that aligns with the blessings of Ramadan rather than exacerbating the financial strain many Nigerians are facing.
He expressed concern that some traders have been inflating prices to exorbitant levels, taking advantage of the season.
“Many Nigerians are struggling with poor income and are living on the edge of survival,” Jamilu noted, highlighting the tough economic conditions that have left families grappling with basic necessities.
The MATAN president urged the Federal Government to reassess its economic policies to make them more accessible and supportive of the common citizen and called on state and local governments to implement measures to alleviate the burden on Nigerians.
In his message to Muslims, Jamilu wished them a blessed and successful Ramadan and
urged the faithful to embrace and practice the core lessons of the season.
Jamilu encouraged wealthy individuals, philanthropists, and organizations to extend their support to those in need during this challenging time.
Jamilu, who serves as the Special Adviser to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State on Cooperatives, emphasized the importance of communal support and solidarity, especially during such trying times.
