Nigeria has been thrown into mourning following the death one of its most prominent political figures and staunch advocates for the Niger Delta, Chief (Dr.) Senator Edwin Kiagbodo Clark.
The elder statesman, Ijaw leader, and former Federal Commissioner for Information passed away on Monday, February 17, 2025, at the age of 97.
In a statement signed by Prof. C.C. Clark and Mr. Penawei Clark on behalf of the family, it was confirmed that Chief Clark had died, and the family expressed their gratitude for the outpouring of prayers and support. Details regarding funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
Chief Edwin Clark was more than a politician; he was a symbol of activism and advocacy.
His life’s work centered on justice, equity, and the development of the Niger Delta. Serving as the Federal Commissioner for Information under General Yakubu Gowon, he used his position to highlight the issues of resource control and economic justice for the oil-producing communities of Nigeria.
An unwavering voice for the Niger Delta, Chief Clark’s legacy in political activism extended through his role in the Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), where he was a relentless proponent of restructuring and a more equitable Nigerian federation.
Beyond politics, Clark made significant contributions to education, founding Edwin Clark University in Kiagbodo. His passion for youth empowerment and educational development stood as a pillar of his enduring legacy.
Chief Clark’s death marks the conclusion of a remarkable era in Nigerian public life.
However, his courage, activism, and commitment to his people will continue to inspire generations to come.
