A hit-and-run accident in Nnewi in Anambra state has killed six people, comprising three young girls, a woman, and two men.

Our correspondent reports that the tragic incident occurred on Friday at Command Junction, where a trailer, carrying a full load of cement, lost control after experiencing brake failure.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anambra State Command, disclosed that the crash involved a black commercial trailer, registered UKP-540-YP, and a white Mercedes Benz lorry, registered ATN-279ZK.

The trailer, the Corps added, which was descending a hill at high speed, collided with the lorry before crashing into a roadside container shop, causing further damage to a nearby building.

The FRSC Sector Commander, Mrs. Joyce Alexander, confirmed that the crash also involved three motorcycles, adding that the riders’ details remain unknown.

She stated that four male adults were injured, pointing out that the victims who died include one female adult, three children, and two male adults. Among the fatalities, a female adult and a male adult were found trapped inside a building, necessitating rescue efforts by the FRSC team, she said.

According to the sector commander said that after extricating the victims, the bodies were taken to Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital in Nnewi for identification.

Mrs. Alexander, who visited the crash site, said she offered condolences to the owner of the house damaged in the incident and assured that the FRSC would continue its investigation to track the driver and owner of the trailer.

She also visited the hospital to check on the injured survivors, promising to monitor their recovery closely.

She said that FRSC personnel worked to ensure the safe trans-loading of cement bags from the wreckage, with a heavy-duty tow truck on standby to remove the trailer,in collaboration with the Police.

The investigation into the cause of the crash continues, as authorities work to bring those responsible to justice.
