The Okengwe Development Association (ODA) recently witnessed a seamless leadership transition, marking a new chapter in its 90-year history. On December 30, 2024, a free, fair, and credible electoral process culminated in the election of Hon. Sani Emmanuel Azika as President-General, ODA ,alongside other officers.
This peaceful election process, guided by consensus and zoning arrangements, reflects the association’s commitment to unity, peace, and community development.
The election’s smooth conduct underscores the collective resolve of ODA members to prioritize harmony and shared goals. The consensus-based approach not only ensured inclusivity but also set a precedent for future leadership transitions. Members expressed optimism that the new executive council would strengthen the association’s mission and amplify its impact on the Okengwe community.
In his acceptance speech, Hon. Azika outlined his vision for purposeful leadership. He emphasized optimizing operational processes, enhancing productivity, and achieving strategic goals. “With the right individuals who share our vision and values, we can build a dynamic team to propel the ODA toward its objectives,” he said.
He further committed his exco to transparency, accountability, and collaboration with security agencies to safeguard members and foster peace.
Hon. Azika’s election has drawn goodwill messages from members and stakeholders. High Chief Stephen Salawu of the Lokoja branch captured the community’s sentiment in his congratulatory note, describing Azika as a leader poised to drive progress. They emphasize the need for an inclusive approach that harnesses the collective strengths of ODA’s diverse membership. In today’s digital age, technology offers transformative potential for grassroots organizations. The ODA’s new leadership has been advised to adopt digital tools for project management, communication, and fundraising. Such tools can streamline operations, enhance efficiency, and increase the association’s visibility.
Additionally, partnerships with local governments, especially in kogi central,NGOs, and businesses can unlock funding opportunities and support ambitious projects. Grant applications and sponsorships can provide the resources needed to implement impactful initiatives.
To sustain momentum, the ODA must invest in its members. Training sessions, seminars, and mentorship programmes can enhance leadership and project management skills. By empowering members, the association not only promotes personal development but also strengthens its capacity to achieve its goals.
Founded in 1934, the Okengwe Development Association has a storied history of fostering unity, promoting education, and advancing infrastructure. Its achievements include schools, healthcare facilities, and roads, alongside efforts to preserve cultural heritage. These accomplishments underscore the association’s role as a model for grassroots development in Nigeria.
As the new leadership assumes its mandate, the ODA stands at a crossroads. By embracing inclusivity, innovation, and sustainability, the association can transform challenges into opportunities. With strategic planning and unwavering dedication, Hon. Azika and his team can elevate ODA’s legacy, driving Okengwe community toward a brighter, more prosperous future.
