The Federal Government, through the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has expressed heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in recent stampedes during food distribution exercises in Ibadan, Abuja, and Okija.
In a statement signed by Rabiu Ibrahim, Special Assistant (Media) to the Minister, and shared with The Reporters on Monday, Idris described the tragedies as deeply saddening. He extended thoughts and prayers to the victims, their families, and everyone affected by the incidents.
“These tragic events highlight the urgent need for proper crowd management during such charitable activities, particularly in the festive season,” the Minister stated.
Idris acknowledged the goodwill behind such events but emphasized the importance of adhering to the directive of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun. He urged organizers to collaborate with local police formations and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to ensure adequate crowd control and security measures.
The Minister also called on politicians and stakeholders to avoid politicizing the incidents, stressing that these tragedies are not related to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic reforms.
“It’s important to note that similar incidents have occurred in the past, long before the current administration. Linking these tragedies to the President’s reforms is both unfounded and misleading,” Idris added.
While assuring Nigerians that the government’s reforms are aimed at uplifting vulnerable citizens and fostering economic growth, Idris appealed for collective responsibility to ensure a peaceful and joyous Yuletide season, free from preventable tragedies.
