In preparation for the busy yuletide season, the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Malam Shehu Mohammed, has launched an end-of-year traffic monitoring exercise across key highways in Nigeria’s North Central and Eastern regions.
Speaking on Sunday along the Lokoja-Abaji highway in Abuja, Mohammed stressed the importance of the initiative, which is he said is aimed at ensuring the safety of commuters during the festive period.
“This is a special time of year when all FRSC personnel are on high alert. The management team and I are here to monitor and supervise operations to create a safe motoring environment for travelers,” he said.
Our correspondent reports that the exercise is focused on achieving zero fatalities and injuries during end-of-year travels, with particular attention to the Abuja-Lokoja-Okene-Agbor-Asaba-Onitsha corridor, a high-traffic route during the season.
Mohammed emphasized the need for motorists to obey traffic regulations, urging drivers to avoid reckless behavior and adhere to road safety guidelines.
“This annual exercise encourages our staff and reassures the public of our commitment to road safety. We also urge passengers to speak up against reckless driving. If you see something, say something,” Mohammed said.
He noted that the operation, running until January 15, 2024, involves continuous traffic monitoring and public education to reduce road crashes.
Observing traffic movement along the monitored routes, Mohammed commended drivers for their cooperation while warning against complacency.
He also assured the public of the FRSC’s dedication to ensuring safer roads.
The exercise includes on-the-spot checks and educational initiatives as part of the FRSC’s “Operation Zero Tolerance” campaign, aimed at minimizing accidents and ensuring smoother travel during the festive season.
“Together, by obeying traffic rules and fostering cooperation between drivers and passengers, we can achieve a safer holiday period,” Mohammed stressed.
