In a world where technological advancements are reshaping societies, the role of young innovators in driving change cannot be overstated. This reality was exemplified by Abdulrahman Raji, a graduate of Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, who recently showcased his remarkable contributions to assist visually impaired individuals and enhance security systems through his inventions.
Raji’s story is a testament to the untapped potential of Nigerian youths in science and technology. At the 4th combined convocation ceremony of Kogi State Polytechnic, he unveiled his latest creation: a smart walking stick designed to aid visually impaired persons. This innovative device uses sensors to detect obstacles, guiding users along a safe path and making navigation significantly easier.
Raji says his inspiration for Science and technological stemmed from his empathy for the challenges faced by visually impaired individuals.
“Most of the challenges blind people face in society involve collisions with objects in their path. I always feel bad seeing them in such situations,” he explained.
The smart walking stick, equipped with obstacle-detection technology, ensures users can avoid hazards and move seamlessly.
Beyond this invention, Raji’s work spans various fields of embedded systems—electronic components used to create smart devices. His expertise has led to the development of devices aimed at improving home security and surveillance.
Innovations in Security Technology
Raji has also made significant contribution in security technology by creating a motion-detection device, which he aptly calls the “artificial gateman.” This device identifies intruders in a home, office, or factory when the owner is absent. Once triggered, the system sends an alert via text message to the owner, enabling timely action,he explains.
Taking home security a step further, Raji invented an advanced computer surveillance system that surpasses traditional CCTV According to this young innovator,yhis system captures intruders’ images and detects suspicious activities, relaying the captured data, text, and voice alerts to the owner’s phone.
“This system elevates home security by integrating real-time notifications and preventive measures,” he stated.
Raji shares the view that science and technology is what Nigeria needs as. pathway to solving societal challenges
Raji believes that technological innovation can address many societal challenges, including flooding and crime. However, he emphasizes the need for government support to nurture scientific talent and ideas.
“Kogi State is blessed with many youths like me who have a burning desire to translate technological ideas into reality. “What we need is an enabling environment to conduct research, excel, and use our findings to solve environmental and security challenges,” he said.
To achieve this, Raji called on the state and federal governments to establish a Centre for Research and Innovation, providing resources and platforms for young scientists to thrive. Such initiatives, he further believes will not only harness the creativity of youths but also contribute to national development.
On the Future of youths in technology, Raji’s story highlights the critical role Nigerian youths can play in driving innovation when given the right opportunities. He beats his chest saying that his inventions are practical solutions to pressing issues, pointing out that they demonstrate the potential impact of youth-led research and development.
Therefore,by investing in young talents like Raji and fostering a culture of innovation, Nigeria can build a future where science and technology are central to addressing societal challenges.
