In a heartfelt demonstration of humanity, the Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS), in collaboration with the European Commission’s Directorate General for Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection (ECHO), has provided critical support to 1,100 households in Kogi State devastated by the 2022 floods.
The initiative underscores the shared mission of restoring dignity and hope to the most vulnerable members of society.
Prof. Adeyemo Andronicus, Director of Programmes at the NRCS, emphasized that the relief efforts targeted those most in need—pregnant women, the elderly, people with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups.
Beneficiaries received cash grants of ₦77,000 each,alongside essential non-food items such as buckets, jerry cans, and water purification tablets to help them rebuild their lives.
“This partnership with ECHO goes beyond resources; it reflects a deep commitment to humanity. Every cash grant, every rehabilitated water point, and every act of support is a testament to our collective responsibility to stand by those in crisis,” Andronicus stated.
Acknowledging the essential role of partnerships, Andronicus lauded the Nigerian government and other stakeholders for their collaborative efforts. “Together, we ensure that aid reaches those who need it most, swiftly and effectively,” he added.
Benjamin Ajodo, Kogi State Branch Chairman of the NRCS, described the intervention as a lifeline for the victims, helping to mitigate the hardships caused by the flood.
“This effort is not just a token; it’s a promise to the vulnerable that they are not forgotten,” he said.
At the distribution event, beneficiaries expressed profound appreciation for the care and love extended to them during their time of adversity.
“This support has brought a ray of hope to our lives. It will go a long way in helping us recover from the disaster,” one recipient said.
In his goodwill message, the Maigari of Lokoja, HRM Alhaji (Dr.) Ibrahim Gambo Kabir III, represented by the Hakimi of Ward ‘D’, Alhaji Muhammad Sani Nasidi, applauded the NRCS and ECHO for their noble gesture, describing it as a beacon of hope for the affected communities.
The NRCS initiative highlights the importance of unity and collective action in addressing humanitarian crises.
“In times of disaster, it is our shared humanity that shines brightest,” Andronicus said.
The society’s work, supported by ECHO and other partners, continues to inspire hope and resilience among those most affected by the flood.
