The National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) has issued a public advisory urging Nigerians to remain vigilant, following reports of the emergence of the COVID-19 Variant XEC in about 29 countries.
Speaking during a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, Mrs. Gloria Ogbaki, the NBMA Communications Officer, emphasized the importance of relying on accurate information from trusted health authorities to prevent the spread of misinformation and panic.
On key advisory points for the public, she Nigerians to stay updated with reliable sources.
“Please rely on trusted health authorities for accurate information regarding COVID-19 and any emerging variants.Misinformation can lead to confusion and jeopardise public health efforts,” Mrs. Ogbaki cautioned.
She further urged the people to maintain preventive practices
and follow proven COVID-19 preventive measures, including regular hand washing, wearing face masks in crowded places, and practicing social distancing when necessary.
Ogbaki, who said that the vaccination remains crucial in checking checking the variant,reiterated the importance of vaccination, stating, “Getting vaccinated remains one of the most effective means of preventing severe illness and complications from COVID-19.”
The NBMA Communications Officer called on the people to report symptoms promptly, what individuals are experiencing regarding COVID-19 symptoms.
She identified symptoms as fever, cough, shortness of breath, or loss of taste or smell for prompt medical attention, adding that those predisposed to such symptoms must adhere to guidance from local health authorities.
In the event of suspected or confirmed cases of the XEC variant, she advised citizens to cooperate fully with health officials to support containment efforts.
Mrs. Ogbaki, however ,confirmed that there are currently no reported cases of the XEC variant in Nigeria but
assured the public that NBMA is in collaboration with relevant stakeholders to actively monitoring the situation.
“The NBMA is committed to safeguarding public health and taking all necessary precautions to prevent the potential spread of the XEC variant into the country,” she said.
She said that as part of its ongoing biosecurity and biosafety initiatives, the NBMA is working tirelessly to protect Nigerians from emerging health threats.
Mrs. Ogbaki further assured that the agency would continue to provide timely updates and guidance as more information becomes available.
For accurate information and updates, citizens she advised the public to stay connected with official health channels, such as the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the Federal Ministry of Health.
