For over a decade, Bagana,an agrarian community in Omala Local Government Area of Kogi State, stood as a symbol of despair. A once-thriving region was brought to its knees by a protracted crisis between the Agatu people and suspected herdsmen from neighboring Benue State. Displacement, destruction, and fear became the norm, as thousands were forced to abandon their ancestral homes in search of safety.

However,a new chapter of hope is being written in Bagana, courtesy of the concerted efforts of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, the Nigerian military, and other security agencies to make it a reality.
Determine to restore permanent peace to Bagana, the Tinubu’s administration established Forward Operating Base (FOB),a security outfit, in the area.
The security outfit is strategically positioned in Bagana charged with the responsibility of serving as a stronghold against recurring conflicts, providing a deterrent to violence and fostering lasting peace.
It is instructive to note that the Governor’s unwavering determination to restore peace to Bagana and his administration’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property are changing the narrative in Bagana and its environs boosted by FOB.
In accomplishing this determined mission and boost the morale men of the Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Abejukolo and Bagana.Governor Ododo visited the base on Monday November 25,2024.
At the occasion he addressed the joint troops responsible for stabilizing the area,comprising the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy, Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and local vigilantes, and commended the forces for playing pivotal role in restoring peace to a community long ravaged by violence.
“We are here to appreciate you for the good work you are doing. These gallant troops are the reason why the people of Kogi State are sleeping with their two eyes closed,” the Governor remarked.
The Commander of 12 Brigade, Brigadier O.A Fadairo, appreciated Gov Ododo for creating an enabling environment for the FOB to operate properly.
“Today, normalcy has returned to the deserted town of Bagana, and marketing operations have fully commenced, he said.
To all lovers of peace,the governor’s words carry a tone of gratitude,an expression of a vwed determination of a leader and resolve, reflecting his administration’s steadfast focus on ensuring the safety and security of the people.
Governor Ododo recalled his first visit to Bagana, a moment that left him in tears as he surveyed the destruction and listened to the harrowing accounts of displaced residents. He, however, noted that the atmosphere has shifted from one of despair to cautious optimism.
“The last time I was here, I went away in tears. But today, we are all jubilating, because peace has come back to this community,” he declared, celebrating the progress made since the establishment of the Forward Operating Base in Bagana.
The Governor emphasized that the improved security in Bagana is a testament to his administration’s unwavering commitment to fostering a peaceful, united, and progressive Kogi State.
In their response,residents of Bagana say they are grateful to God and Ododo for the return of peace to their community but called on the state government to take the next crucial step to rebuild the community.
Apostle Peace Peter Simeon, a local resident, expressed heartfelt appreciation for Governor Ododo’s decisive actions while urging him to prioritize the reconstruction of destroyed infrastructure.
“We appeal to the Kogi State Government to rebuild the affected communities, including Bagana, Agojeju-Odoh, Agbenema, and others. These steps are essential for sustainable peace and development,” Simeon said.
Similarly, Halimat Abu, another resident, stressed the urgent need for healthcare and educational facilities. “The government should ensure returning residents have access to medical care and educational opportunities as they resettle,” she added.
In his pledge to support the community to recover Governor Ododo reassured residents, and troops alike of his administration’s commitment to providing the necessary logistical support to sustain peace.
The contention in certain quarters is that,while the return of displaced residents marks a significant milestone, the fear of a relapse into violence remains a pressing concern for many.
Ododo thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support in the establishment of the FOB in Bagana, noting that the improved security in Bagana is a testament of the administration’s unwavering commitment to lead a peaceful, united, and a progressive Kogi State.
Hon. Umar Yahaya, member representing Omala State Constituency in the Kogi State House of Assembly, lauded the governor for delivering on his promises.
“Omala is not just on the governor’s radar; it is evidently close to his heart,” Hon. Yahaya declared during his speech.
He noted that the establishment of the military base underscored the governor’s proactive approach to security, with Omala receiving unprecedented attention under his administration.
“This marks the third visit of His Excellency to Omala within his first year in office—a historic milestone that has deepened the bond between the governor and the people of this local government.
“Your Excellency, Your recent lifting of the suspension of the Paramount Ruler of the Chairman, Omala Traditional Council, Onu Ife, Chief Boniface, is equally another masterstroke that has not only rekindled the love of Omala people for your administration, it has made you occupy a permanent place in the hearts of Omalites.
He described the governor’s decision to reinstate Chief Boniface Musa, who is also the Onu Ife and Chairman of Omala Traditional Council, as laudable gesture of reconciliation and respect for traditional institutions. This move, along with the deployment of joint military forces to crisis-prone areas, shows a balanced approach to governance—one that values collaboration, infrastructure, and peacebuilding, he added.
“Your Excellency, without mincing words,be rest assured of the cooperation of the people of Omala LGA who have looked forward to a Military Base as a panacea for lasting peace. We will collectively work with the troops in providing the necessary support and information to enable them achieve success,”Hon. Yahaya continued.
According to Hon. Yahaya, the governor’s people-oriented policies have restored hope and confidence across the state, making Kogi a hub for socio-economic progress and investment.
The lawmaker said that Governor Ododo’s administration has not only prioritized security but has also embarked on transformative projects in Omala. These include the ongoing construction of the Abejukolo Township Road, a vital infrastructure development that enhances connectivity and economic growth in the region.
At the level of community’s commitment,Hon. Yahaya assured the governor of the unwavering support of Omala’s residents, pledging their cooperation in providing intelligence and assistance to the troops stationed in the FOB.
