The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has derecognized 13 schools and blacklisted 14 supervisors in Kogi State for their involvement in various forms of examination malpractices during the 2023/2024 examinations.
The Commissioner for Education, Wemi Jones, disclosed this during a meeting in Lokoja with principals and supervisors implicated by WAEC.
He warned that principals, teachers, and supervisors who facilitated or participated in examination malpractice would face prosecution under the Kogi State Education Law and Other Matters Connected Therewith, 2020.
“Examination malpractice is a criminal offense and will be treated as such,” the Commissioner emphasized.
He announced the formation of a committee, headed by the Permanent Secretary, to investigate those indicted by WAEC, adding that individual found guilty would face legal action.
According to Jones, Kogi State has made significant investments in education and will not allow unethical practices to undermine the progress achieved in the sector.
Dr. Jibrin Seidu Alhaji, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education,urged principals and supervisors to reflect on their actions.
He lamented that such acts harm both the state and the students’ future.
Dr. Jibrin described educators who engage in malpractice as “cheats,” contrasting them with teachers who are recognized for excellence.
He warned that those found culpable would face severe sanctions, underscoring the state’s commitment to maintaining high standards in education.
