The Police Command Kwara State has arrested two suspects in connection with the shocking murder of a 34-year-old man, Rafiu Akao, in the Asunlere area of Oke Oyi, Ilorin.
The Commissioner of Police in the state,CP.Victor Olaiya, confirmed the arrest during a press briefing at the police headquarters in Ilorin on Wednesday, warning against vigilantism and the spread of misinformation.
According to CP. Olaiya, Akao’s headless body was found on November 4 near a stream in Oke Oyi, prompting police detectives to quickly investigate the scene.
Officers recovered an Itel Android phone and a motorcycle believed to belong to the perpetrators, leading to the arrest of two suspects, Peter Samuel (38) and Jeremiah Tiozinda (26), on November 6.
“The suspects have confessed to the crime, revealing they discarded Akao’s head in a nearby river.
Efforts to recover the remains are ongoing,” CP Olaiya disclosed.
“The investigation is being led by the Kwara State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID). All necessary resources are being deployed to ensure thorough investigation and bring those responsible to justice,” CP Olaiya assured.
In a separate incident, CP. Olaiya condemned an act of vigilantism in which an innocent farmer was mistakenly attacked by villagers and motorcycle operators, who suspected him of involvement in the murder.
His vehicle was extensively damaged during the attack, allegedly instigated by Yusuf Abdulkareem (22) and Jaiyeola Fatai (40).
Both individuals have been charged with conspiracy, public disturbance, and mischief.
CP Olaiya also addressed rumors circulating on social media that linked the popular local restaurant “Item7” to the murder.
He revealed that these rumors were traced to Abdulwakeel Olajuwon, who used his platform, “Weaky TV,” to spread the false information.
Olajuwon has since been charged under the Cybercrimes Act for spreading misinformation.
“Deliberately spreading false information to incite harm or disrupt investigations is a serious offense with legal consequences,” CP.Olaiya warned, urging the public to avoid sharing unverified information and to rely on updates from official law enforcement channels.
