In Niger State, a mild drama unfolded at the Legbo Kutigi International Conference Centre, Minna, as hungry youths expressed frustration over the absence of food during the 2024 United Nations World Food Day (WFD) celebrations.
The event, attended by the Deputy Governor, Comrade Yakubu Garba, representing Governor Mohammed Umar Bago, focused on food security with the theme “Safer Foods and Better Health.”
Our correspondent reports that, hower,some young attendees, mainly students, were visibly disappointed when no food was provided, especially as they watched the dignitaries cut a ceremonial cake.
Chants of “Give us food, not cake cutting” echoed through the hall as some youths confronted the organizers over the lack of refreshments.
Tensions rose when stern-looking security personnel attempted to quell the protest and escort the youths out.
Despite these efforts, several attendees, joined by suspected thugs, moved toward a section with light refreshments, overpowering attendants to take food.
Governor Bago emphasized the need for collective support and strategic policies to improve food security, acknowledging the struggles Niger State and the nation face with high food costs, economic challenges, and climate change.
He reiterated his administration’s commitment to utilizing the State’s vast agricultural potential, promising that millions of hectares would be explored to help tackle hunger.
