The Niger State government has established an 8-member Price Control and Monitoring Board to regulate food prices and reduce hunger caused by inflation.
Announcing the new Board, Secretary to the State Government (SSG), in Minna, Alhaji Abubakar Usman, emphasized its role in easing economic hardships by stabilizing the cost of essential goods.
According to the SSG, the board—approved by Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago—will help ensure fairness between sellers and consumers.
He said the initiative to curb price manipulation, especially by middlemen, across the state’s 25 local government areas.
The Board, whose operations commence immediately, is tasked with monitoring, controlling, and stabilizing food prices.
It will combat practices such as hoarding and price exploitation, ensuring equitable access to essential commodities for residents.
Alhaji Usman stated that the Board has authority to enforce compliance and impose penalties on violators to maintain market stability.
Alhaji Hussaini Ahmed, a retired Permanent Secretary, has been appointed as the Board Chairman.
He assured the government of the Board’s dedication to fulfilling its mission.
Other members include representatives from various government sectors, the Niger State police, and market associations, fostering collaboration with local leaders and community stakeholders for effective price regulation.
