Niger State-based NGO, Global Promoters for Community Initiatives, has called on the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) to partner in ending Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in the state.
Hajara Achibi, Head of Monitoring and Evaluation for the initiative, made the appeal during a courtesy visit to NUJ Chairman Comrade Abu Nmodu at the IBB Pen House.
She emphasized that journalists are essential in advocating against GBV through awareness campaigns and education.
Achibi disclosed that women in Bosso and Chanchaga local government areas had been trained to help the NGO in grassroots outreach. The NGO also aims to establish Special Courts to expedite GBV prosecutions.
Comrade Abu Nmodu expressed support for the establishment of these Special Courts, noting that they would alleviate pressure on conventional courts and provide faster justice for GBV victims.
He attributed the rise in GBV cases to socio-economic and psychological factors and commended the NGO’s efforts to reshape societal attitudes.
The NUJ chairman expressed commitment to mobilizing members to support the NGO’s initiatives and focus on GBV reporting to aid in combating the issue.
