LG Autonomy:KONGONET Applauds Supreme Court Decision.

,,,,,,, Urges Kogi Government to Conduct Local Government Elections.

KONGONET, representing a coalition of civil society groups in Kogi State, has expressed satisfaction with the recent landmark Supreme Court ruling affirming the financial autonomy of local government councils in Nigeria.

In a statement released by Amb. Idris Ozovehe Muraina, Chairperson of KONGONET, in Lokoja on Saturday and copied The Reporters,the organization emphasized that the judgement paved way for enhanced grassroots governance and transparency in local administration.

Muraina called on the Kogi State Government to swiftly dissolve the current local government transition committee and initiate preparations for local government council elections.

He stressed the importance of democratically elected leaders in ensuring the effective representation of local communities.

According to KONGONET boss,several prominent civil society organizations in Kogi State, including Conscience for Human Rights and Conflict Resolution (CHRCR) and Initiative for Grassroot Advance (INGRA), have echoed KONGONET’s stance, urging immediate implementation of the Supreme Court ruling.

KONGONET also congratulated Governor Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo on his recent affirmation by the Appellate Court and urged him to leverage this validation to uphold good governance and grassroots democracy.

The organization underscored the significance of adhering to democratic principles and the rule of law in empowering local communities.

“We call on the Kogi State Government to act decisively in conducting local government elections,” Muraina stated, emphasizing KONGONET’s commitment to collaborating with stakeholders for sustainable development in the state.
