Titus Ashaolu, SAN, a former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Kwara State, has called on the Federal Government to enforce the Supreme Court ruling on local government autonomy.
Speaking with journalists on Friday in Ilorin, Ashaolu stressed that implementing the court’s judgment would rejuvenate and revitalize local governments across the nation. He highlighted the need to align any constitutional amendments with the Supreme Court’s verdict on local government autonomy.
Ashaolu urged state governors to comply with the court’s directive and conduct elections in local governments currently managed by caretaker committees.
The former commissioner reminded the governors that the ruling mandates direct payment of funds to local government accounts, ensuring their financial independence from state governments.
Supporting this stance, Comrade Terry Henry Isaac, Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) in Kwara State, stated that the Supreme Court decision has liberated local governments from state control.
He called on state governors to respect the court order and restore local governments to their rightful status as the third tier of government.
