The Kogi State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a cholera-free environment statewide, unveiling comprehensive infection prevention measures as a proactive step against the disease.
Dr. Abdulazeez Adams Adeiza, the Commissioner for Health, revealed this in a statement released to journalists in Lokoja on Wednesday. He highlighted the decisive actions taken by the state government in response to the recent cholera outbreak nationwide.
Adeiza noted that Kogi State has been relatively fortunate with minimal impact from the current outbreak, identifying no more than two confirmed cases in Lokoja and Omala LGAs. Thankfully, there have been no fatalities, with one case treated and discharged while the other remains under care.
To prevent further spread, Adeiza stated that the Ministry of Health has implemented rigorous surveillance protocols, conducted extensive training for healthcare professionals, and launched widespread awareness campaigns.
“We have equipped our healthcare workers with necessary training and resources to ensure a swift and effective response to any potential outbreak,” Adeiza emphasized, underscoring the readiness of the state.
He stressed the importance of community involvement, highlighting collaboration with community leaders, religious figures, and traditional rulers to educate the public on preventive measures.
“Citizens are encouraged to maintain good hygiene practices, including regular handwashing and consumption of clean water,” he added.
A dedicated cholera response team comprising healthcare workers, surveillance officers, and laboratory technicians has been formed, tasked with investigating reported cases, collecting samples, and administering appropriate treatments, according to the commissioner.
