The three tubers of yam in the picture were sold at N2,000 in Lokoja about a year ago.
However, as at the last market in Lokoja on April 8,2024, it was sold at N6,000. This means that each tuber of yam carries N2,000 price tag.
At the same market and within the day under review,a sizeable chicken sold at N15,000 instead of N5,000 few months ago.Same goes for other consumable and non consumable items with outrageous price tags.
The pump price of fuel which hovers around N655.000.or there about per litre has remained stable for some weeks now in the area.
The high cost of living in Nigeria not withstanding, there has been feeling in some quarters in Lokoja is that, the state government need to check the attitude of shylock traders in Lokoja through some regulatory mechanism, to bring the price of foodstuffs to the level the poor can afford.
For instance, whereas, naira has appreciated significantly against dollar in recent time and in other states, people are beginning to sigh a relieve as this has shown in price of food items, however small but in Lokoja, the opposite is the case.
This worrisome development typifies other instances where prices of goods and services in Lokoja and its environs continue to hit the roof begging for lasting solution.
