The General Manager, Kogi State Water Board, Engr. Mohammed Sagir has attributed the scarcity of potable water in Lokoja and its environs in kogi state,north central Nigeria, to a voltage drop in the power supply.
He disclosed in a statement he made available to The Reporters in Lokoja on Tuesday, based on an inquiry made to him by the online publication on the issue.
Confirming the problem, he said, “Yes there is a voltage drop in the power supply and it has affected our electric motors, works on it is progressing.”
Our correspondent reports that the area has been experiencing scarcity of drinkable water close to a week as at the time of this report.
Meanwhile, many families and organizations told The Reporters that have been going through difficulties getting hygienic water for domestic and commercial purposes.
Many, who have no well or borehole in their houses, our investigation, have resorted to fetching water from River Niger and streams to meet their water demands.
Operators of restaurants and other commercial outfits in Lokoja, while relaying their experiences in separate interviews with our correspondent, complained bitterly over the development.
According to them, the scarcity is affecting their business negatively, adding that they have to rely on water vendors, a development they noted has added extra production cost and profit to their businesses.
The finding by the online publication revealed that in the absence of adequate commercial boreholes in Lokoja, some owners of wells or boreholes have been magnanimous in exhibiting good neighborliness.
This they have been doing by allowing people access to their facility to fetch water to ease the hardship consequent upon the scarcity of water in the area.
The people called on the board to accelerate the pace of finding lasting solutions to the problem, to save them from hardship, especially averting waterborne diseases.
Efforts by our correspondent to get the side of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, AEDC in Lokoja, on the issue, proved abortive.
Water, apart from its crucial role in stabilizing domestic and commercial activities of the people also plays a vital function in strengthening public health in many ways.
According to the cdc.gov,water keeps a normal temperature of the people , lubricates and cushions their joints.
It also protects their spinal cord, ensure functioning of other sensitive tissues and gets rid of wastes through urination, perspiration, and bowel movements among other importance.
