The Nigerian government says it has commenced the implementation of the new National Teaching Policy.
The Minister of Education, Alhaji Adamu Adamu, disclosed at a news briefing in Abuja on Monday, to mark this year’s World Teachers Day.
“This year’s theme, The Transformation of Education Begins with Teachers” emphasized the need and importance of empowering teachers for effective transformation of education, to ensure quality teaching and learning; as well as channeling technological growth to match up the changes needed for national development.
Alhaji Adamu Adamu said the policy was solely aimed at addressing the career path of teachers, their remuneration, professional teaching standards, qualification, deployment and management of teachers.
He also reiterated the need to continually refresh the consciousness of government towards the value, role and importance of teachers in nation building, the attainment and sustainability of quality education.
Meanwhile, the ministry started this year’s preparation with a call for nomination among Unity Colleges nation wide, for selection of meritorious nominees.
The national President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Comrade Audu Titus Amba, represented by Mr Stephen, lauded the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, for sustaining the PTSEA, which has helped to give help to teachers, and also promote the dignity of the teaching profession at large.
Mr Audu highlighted that teachers remain key players in any nation building.
He further commended the incumbent administration, for signing into law the harmonized Retirement age for teachers on attainment of 65 years or 40 years of pensionable service.
Our Correspondent reports that the grand finale for the teachers day is slated for Wednesday, 5th October 2022 at Eagle’s Square in Abuja.
Meanwhile,school resumed on Monday with the Kogi Government Reaffirming its Commitment to revamping education sector
The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mr Wemi Jones,gave the assurance while speaking with newsmen on Monday in Lokoja.
”As for us as Government, we will do everything that is required to revamp education in our state, and take it to the level that all of us will be proud and say we have done our best.
”What we need to do now is to sustain and improve on the momentum we have achieved as far as academic activities are concerned,” he said.
He noted that one of the policies of education in the state was to always conduct ‘welcome test’ every first week of resumption, as part of the Continuous Assessment (CA) to ensure that students resume early.
Jones assured that a joint team from the Ministry and the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) would be visiting some schools to ensure that schools were back and running.
The Commissioner urged the teachers to continue to do their best, disclosing that the state government was in the process of concluding the recruitment of fresh 4,000 teachers in the next one to two weeks,
He stressed that the government had gone very far with the recruitment exercise, saying it was in the process of final identification of who to employ in conjunction with the State Science Technical Education and Teaching Service Commission (STETSCOM).
Jones advised parents to give their wards the support and encouragement needed for them to excel in their academic activities.
He encouraged the students to know that they remained the only one that could help themselves, saying, ”they are the architect of their future.
”It is only the students themselves that can make a meaning out of every support they get from their parents and teachers”.
The Commissioner, therefore, called on them to study very hard, concentrate on their studies and put into practice what they were being thought.
Our Correspondent who visited some schools in Lokoja, revealed that there were low turnout of students due to flood ravaging some part of Lokoja.
The Principal of GYB Model Science Secondary School, Dr Yakubu Godwins, said the school had resumed, adding that teachers were on ground
adding that the academic activities had started in earnest.
”However, we have the issue of flood which has affected the turnout of our students this morning.
”The teachers and non teaching staff who struggled to be here have to pass through some hectic process to find their way to school.
”We have also started seen some traces of flood in the school compound now but we hope it will reseat in the next few days”, he said.
Our correspondent also moved round some of the classrooms where teachers were seen teaching students.
One of the students, Faith Kubule, said she felt very excited for being back to school,after a long holiday.
