The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed Inspector Richard Gele for justifying extortion in a viral video clip on the social media.

The Police Public Relations Officer (Force headquarters) Muyiwa Adejobi, disclosed this in a statement in Abuja on Friday.

According to him,the dismissed Gele was caught in the video clip which trended in June, where he dignified and justified extortion of members of the public as well as official corruption.

Our Correspondent reports that Gele’s dismissal followed public outcry, most especially from youths, who expressed concern over police harassment and extortion.

According to the police, the officer, who until his dismissal, was an inspector with service number, AP/No. 188547, was attached to Police Mobile Force 77 Squadron, Okene, Kogi State and deployed to the Itobe – Anyigba Road.

The police added that Gele was posted to the area, where the event happened, for the safety of road users and commuters.

The police said the officer was de-kitted, having passed through a disciplinary committee within the force, adding that he was enlisted into the police in 2000 and hails from Benue State.

Gele has been handed over to the Commissioner of Police, Kogi State, CP Edward Egbuka, for further necessary action.
