The National Universities Commission (NUC),has rated Usumanu Danfodio University, Sokoto as the university with the highest number of full professors in Nigeria in 2021.
The Commission disclosed this in Abuja in a series of data and analyses it published on its website.
According NUC, the Usman Dan Fodio University scored 36.44 per cent, followed at close range by the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, with 35.80 per cent.
The University of Ibadan came third with 29.04 per cent,trailed behind by the University of Lagos in the bottom 16 with 14.75 per cent of professors, according to the Commission.
NUC said the decision to rate the quality of the academic staff on the professorial level was because professorship remained the zenith of academic quality.
Quoting its updated list of approved universities in Nigeria, the Commission said the number rose from 197 to 202 while that of approved post-graduate awarding institutions in increased from 94 to 107 in the outgoing year.
It traced the rating to an assessment of the quality of academic staff in the university, adding that the full professorial category was selected, being the zenith of academic staff quality in a university.
The Commission named other federal universities “with extremely low percentage of professors” as the Federal University, Oye Ekiti; Federal University, Lafia; University of Agriculture, Makurdi; and the University of Uyo, among others.
It pointed out that for the state-owned universities, 11 of them had below 10 per cent of full professors.
NUC named such institutions to include: Cross Rivers University of Technology, Kwara State University, Bayelsa State Medical University, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua University, Adamawa State University.
Others,it added, were: The Technical University, Maitama Sule University, Bauchi State University, Gombe State University, Kano State University of Science and Technology and the Kebbi State University of Science and Technology.
In terms of the private universities’ category, the NUC noted that some institutions had less than six per cent of full professors.
They are: Bowen University, Baze University, Summit University, Crescent University, Hallmark University, Clifford University, Igbinedion University, Augustine University, Al-Qalam University, Landmark University, and Chrisland University, among others, according to NUC.
The Reporters recalls that Usumanu Danfodio University, Sokoto was established in 1975.
