  • The headless articulated vehicle being prevented from explosion by fire fighting personnel in Ilorin on Friday.

Our Correspondent reports that the first disaster(fire disaster), happened in the early hours at Binuyo Compound, off Sabo Line , Isale Maliki area of Ilorin when a fire completely razed a six-bed room residential building, belonging to one Alhaja Khadijat Sulaiman and property worth millions of naira destroyed

Eyewitness told our correspondent that it took the timely intervention of the Disaster Management Unit of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and men of the Kwara State Fire Service to prevent the inferno from spreading to other buildings.

Confirming the incident to newsmen, the spokesman of the NSCDC in the state, Babawale Zaid Afolabi, explained that the fire was caused by electric spark,a development he attributed “largely due to the substandard cable used during the wiring of the buildings.”

” Our officers from the Disaster Management Unit and men of the State Fire Service responded swiftly and were able to prevent the inferno from spreading to nearby buildings”,Babawale further,”he said.

In another development, what would have been a major disaster was averted at the Unity round about in Ilorin also on Friday, as a moving articulated vehicle carrying gas lost its head, leading to profuse leakage of gas.

According to another eyewitness, who spoke with The Reporters, the accident happened also in the morning of the day, adding that it was so fast that he could not ascertain the actual cause of it.

He, however, said that the State Fire Service personnel were summoned by one Mr. Emmanuel and to the scene of the accident, adding that they were able to clean the gas and prevented the fire from spreading to other places.

Speaking on the development, the Director, State Fire Service, Prince
John Falade, urged articulated vehicle drivers to be extra careful while on road, especially when transporting highly flammable substance.

He also appealed to members of the public to always call the Service in case of emergency.
