Mr Bamitale Oguntoyinbo, a former Director, National Orientation Agency (NOA), in Ekiti state, has commended the National Assembly for passing the amendment to the nation’s electoral law.
Oguntoyinbo, also the former Chairman of Oye Local Government area, gave the commendation on Tuesday in an interview with in newsmen.
He said the new amendment to the electoral law, passed by both the Senate and House of Representatives, would help in promoting the nation’s democracy, if President Muhammadu Buhari could sign the it into law.
Oguntoyinbo said that the amended electoral law would reshape Nigeria’s democratic process.
According to him, it will help in electing credible candidates into political offices, describing this as the only way for Nigeria to build a lasting democracy.
He said that if Option A4 had been allowed to function, the issue of corruption, moneybags, insincerity and multiple collection of monies from aspirants during primary elections, would have been dealt with long ago.
“I want to commend the National Assembly members for the singular act to reshape democracy in Nigeria by passing the amendment in the electoral law.
“All electoral indiscipline, which give room for indirect primary elections in Nigeria, where political party leaderships used to install and imposed unpopular candidates on the electorate, will be disallowed.
“I want call on all Nigerians to back and encourage President Buhari to assent to the amended law urgently,” Oguntoyinbo said.
The former NOA director said that with the amended law, when signed, would address the issue of “god fatherism” in Nigeria’s democracy.
He said that the current indirect primary, where delegates were being bribed to support a particular candidate, would cease to exist.
