Most motorists and other road users plying Ganaja road in Lokoja Local Government Area of Kogi State,say they are groaning as the condition of the road get worsen,yet unabated, The Reporters,an online publication reports.
The correspondent of the online news medium, who plied the road on Thursday, recalls that the federal government commenced rehabilitation of the age-long dilapidated 7-kilometre road November 2021.
Though contractors assigned the with the responsibility of rehabilitating the facility moved to the site with equipment and the work started shortly after ceremony,they abandoned work on the road about two months ago.
This negative development prompted the state Commissioner for Works and Housing, Engr. Abubakar Ohere in joining the clarion calls on the federal government to order contractors concerned back to site to continue work.
Ohere expressed concern over the worsening deplorable condition of the road and its effects on motorists and other users,with passionate appeal to the federal government to do the needful to ease life for Ganaja residents and the motoring public.
Those who spoke with The Reporters, on the sorry state of existence of the road, said residents of Ganaja and Gadumo, outskirts of Lokoja, would soon be cut off from Lokoja and other parts of the state and the nation at large,if government does not do something urgent to put the road in a motorable shape.
One of the private car owners,who resides in Ganaja, Alhaji Abdullahi Umar, said his car had broken down due to increased wear and tear as a result driving on the road, almost on daily basis.
” My self and other motorists plying Ganaja road are passionately appealing to the federal government to come to our aid by putting the road in property shape. We are not really finding life easy plying this road.
“Apart from health implication on our health, whereby we inhale poinous dust coming from the road, the telling effect of the deplorable condition of the road on vehicles is not a good story to tell.
“When the government flagged-off the rehabilitation of the road November last year, we all went up in absolute joy, hoping that the traumatic experience we have been going through over the years, plying the road would soon be a thing of the past, but here we are as our hope is fast becoming a mirage,”he said.
The online publication investigation revealed that as many motorists in Ganaja parked their cars or submit them for repairs, operators of tricyclists and commercial motorcyclists are overwhelmed by the high population of commutters struggling to board them to their various destinations in meeting ends.
This development usually manifest in the number of passengers stranded along the road with the attendant agony and time wasted, especially during the morning rush hours.
Efforts by our Correspondent to seek the reaction of the Federal Controller of Works in the state, on the issue, proved abortive as he was said to be absent when he visited his office in Lokoja.
