New NUJ council leadership emerges in Niger

Comrade Abu Nmadu, the immediate past Secretary and a member of the Correspondent’s Chapel has emerged the new Chairman to pilot the affairs of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Niger state Council for three years.

The Reporters correspondent reports that Abu Nmadu, who is the State Correspondent of Leadership Newspapers, defeated the former and immediate past Chairman; Comrade Mohammed Mohammed and Comrade Abdul Idris, respective in a keenly contested election over the weekend.

Declaring the results at the IBB Pen House, Minna the state capital on Saturday, the Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Mr. Dan Amasingha,described the election as one of the best so far in recent time by the council “because ‘it was free, fair, transparent and acceptable to all contestants’.

The outcome of the contest showed that Abdul Idris scored 13 votes, the former Chairman, Mohammed Mohammed, who for the second time lost his bid to return as Council chairman, got 89 votes while the two term former Secretary, Abu Nmodu emerged winner with 135 votes.

Administering the oath of office on the elected officials, the NUJ National President, Mr. Chris Isiguzo, who was represented by the union’s Vice President (North-Central) zone Mr. Wilson Bako, encouraged the new executives to carry all members along in managing the affairs of the union in Niger state.

While commending the maturity exhibited by the contestants and members generally throughout the exercise, Isiguzo congratulated the new state executive and reminded them on the need to work for the betterment of the union and members in the state.

In his acceptance speech, Nmodu pledged to operate an open door policy, whereby every member, including his opponents, would have a say in the affairs of the union during his tenure.

Other members of the seven-man state executive are:the immediate past state Auditor, Comrade Uriah Gana who defeated Comrade Suleiman Kodogi of Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) to emerge state Vice Chairman.
