Some students of Federal universities who have been on “compulsory holiday” for almost ten months now, occasioned by the face-off between the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), have expressed joy over the announcement by the union informing them of possible resumption of academic activities next week.
The Reporters recalls that ASUU, in its Twitter, told the students to be ready to go back to their various institutions of learning as it prepared to meet the government, again next week on its demands for resumption of academic activities.
The students expressed optimism that the out of the planned meeting would produce positive result that would enable Federal universities re-open classes.
Adamu Mustapha, a part four pharmacy student, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in an interview with The Reporters in lokoja on Sunday described ASUU’ Twitter announcement as a big relief to him and thousands of his colleagues all over the country.
“We have been waiting in vain but intensify prayy for ASUU and government to resolve the contending issues that held us back in our academic pursuits since March this year, this time around who knows, our prayer may be close to being answered by almighty Allah, may it be so,” he said.
Another student of the Federal University, Lokoja (FUL), Miss Ohunene Saliu, described her staying at home for the past ten months as a collosal waste to her academic pursuit, adding that ASUU announcement gladdened her much.
“I join my other colleagues in the country for ASUU-Government meeting to be fruitful for us to resume classes and move on with our academic activities,” she told the online publication in Lokoja.
Augustine Adebayo also of FUL appealed to ASUU and government to reach a compromise during the forthcoming meeting, to pave way for resumption of academic activities in the affected universities.
“To say that our staying at home as a result of ASUU strike brings a lot of set to our educational aspiration may not be our of place, but thank God,if what ASUU is qouted as saying is anything to believe, then, there is light at the end of dark tunnel for the Nigerian students in Federal Universities to resume academic work,” he said.
