Some victims of the flood in Lokoja, capital of kogi state on Wednesday, expressed respite to the sour experience the natural disaster has brought to bear on them.
A correspondent of The Reporters, reports that the people’s expresdion followed feasible receding of the flood that has sacked thousands of families from their homes in nine of the 21 local government areas of the state.
Our correspondent who visited some houses near the bank of River Niger at Gadumo,a settlement along Lokoja-Ajaokuta road on Wednesday, reports that the level of water has started reducing.
Some houses which hitherto buried inside water have begun to show appreciable percentage of their structure above the water, though not suitable for their occupants to return to such houses for now.
One of the victims, who asked for veiling of identity, said”: We thank God that the flood is receding gradually. We hope the receding process will accelerate as desired so that victims can return to their houses to start their life again.
“As for me and my family, we have decided to have it quit living at the bank of the river, enough is enough to yearly relocation as a result of this perennial problem.”
The Reporters recalls that last week was a nightmare for residents of Lokoja many of who have to cope with the menace of flood in homes and roads.
The roads mostly affected by the flood are part of Lokoja-Ganaja and Kabawa/old market roads in the state.
Our correspondent reports that apart from forcing many families living in flood prone areas to relocate to safer places, the flood also constitutes serious impediment to human and vehicular movement.
Few individuals such as Senator Tunde Ogbeha, a two-term Senator who represented Kogi West Senatorial district, and associations have extended hands of fellowship to cushion the effect of flood on the victims.
The online media reports that, Lokoja has been without potable water for almost a week now, due to the damage done to the pumping machine at the Greater Lokoja Water Works, according to the Commissioner for Water Resources, Abdulmumin Danga.
