The retired Clerk of the National Assembly, Alhaji Mohammed Sani-Omolori says the National Assembly Service Commission(NASC) has no power to retire him and other staff the commission retired on Wednesday.

Reacting to the development in a statement, the retired clerk, who started his public service in 1985, said his continued stay in office was backed by law and could not be voided by the National Assembly Service Commission.

He said the commission did not have the powers to set aside the revised condition of service passed by the previous Assembly.

Dani-Omolori, therefore, directed all staff of the legislative chamber whom the commission asked to proceed on retirement, to disregard the directive and “go about their lawful duties.”

Duaglobalnews gathered that Dani-Omolori and other staff affected by the retirement were retired based on the declaration by the Commission that any staff who has spent 35 years in service or attains 60 years in public service should leave and will receive his or her retirement letter soon.

Duaglobalnews also gathered that the development finally resolved the tenure elongation agitation for the CNA and the affected staff.

Other staff affected by the exercise is the Secretary of NASC, Mr. Olusanya Ajakaiye.

The online publication recalls that Ahmed Amshi, the commission’s chairman, had approved the retirement age for the National Assembly staff as 60 years of age or upon 35 years of service.

Amshi, in a statement, said
“The commission has approved the immediate retirement of staff of the National Assembly Service who have already attained the retirement age of 35 years of service or 60 years of age,” and that “retirement letters would be issued to the affected staff accordingly.”
